Guests walking into Cree’s visitor lobby immediately notice brightly
colored tubes of LED lights creating constantly changing color
patterns. Next they notice the large TV display – lit by LEDs,
of course – behind the receptionist’s desk. They may not notice
the new LED recessed can lights throughout the lobby because they
produce high-quality, uniform lighting similar to the incandescent
lamps they replaced.
We replaced the lobby ceiling lights in two
areas:
Reception desk – Eight ceiling lights replaced
Waiting
area – Twenty-six ceiling lights replaced
The new LED lights generally
achieved average energy savings from 21 to 71 percent, compared
to the non-LED fixtures they replaced.
Potential cost savings are
increased by the lower maintenance and disposal costs made possible
by the long service life of LEDs (targeted at 50,000 hours) and
by the fact that they do not contain mercury or other hazardous
materials requiring specialized disposal.

* Renaissance Lighting EVO can lights can operate at multiple
light levels. Their energy-demands range from 41 to 15 W. The savings
calculations are based on both these high and low levels.
Cree also added LED fixtures from Avtec,
Inc. to illuminate a display wall, but we have no precise energy-consumption
figures from the replaced fixtures to allow us to calculate energy
savings.
