Cree Conference Rooms: Results

Visitor conference rooms are a high-visibility location for displaying LED lighting to our guests. To demonstrate the variety of available LED lighting products, we did not use the same fixtures in all visitor conference rooms. We chose fixtures from several different vendors, which allowed us to learn more about LED lighting solutions.

These new LED lighting solutions generally achieved average energy savings from 25 to 63 percent for each room, compared to the non-LED fixtures they replaced.

Potential cost savings are increased by the lower maintenance and disposal costs made possible by the long service life of LEDs (targeted at 50,000 hours) and by the fact that they do not contain mercury or other hazardous materials requiring specialized disposal.

Note: In Room #1, we converted standard fluorescent troffers and CFL can lights to Cree-designed specialized color-mixing troffers and Renaissance Lighting LED recessed can lights. The color-mixing troffers create spectacular lighting effects because they can reproduce the full spectrum of visible colors. These color-mixing fixtures are not commercially available, however, and are not detailed below.

* We replaced the six original 2x4 fluorescent troffers with 12 Wissen-LUX 2x2 troffers, but only six Wissen-LUX troffers were required to match the foot-candle-level of the original fluorescent fixtures. The savings calculations are based on using just six LED troffers.

** Renaissance Lighting’s EVO can lights can operate at multiple light levels. Their energy-demands range from 41 to 15 W. The savings calculations are based on both these high and low levels.

*** We replaced 10 of the original 2x4 fluorescent troffers, but only five LED Lighting Fixtures, Inc. 2x2 troffers were required to match the foot-candle-level of the fluorescent fixtures. The savings calculations are based on using just five LED troffers.
